Best MLB Draft Ever

With the recent dominance of Brandon Morrow on the mound for the beloved Mariners (until they lose four in a row, then I will be cursing them) and the absolute ridiculous overpowering dominance of local boy Tim Lincecum in AAA for San Francisco, I wondered how good last year’s draft will turn out to be.

I actually thought out loud, “I wonder how last year’s draft class will be”.

So I took a look at the top 10.

Luke Hochevar, KC – (AA) 2-2, 3.46 ERA, 26 IP, 8 BB, 32 K, 1.19 WHIP
Greg Reynolds, COL – (AA) 1-1, 2.16 ERA, 25 IP, 5 BB, 20 K, 0.92 WHIP
Evan Longoria, TB – (AA) .300, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .972 OPS
Brad Lincoln, PIT – Tommy John Surgery
Brandon Morrow, SEA – (MLB) 2-0, 3.18 ERA, 11 1/3 IP, 8 BB, 12 K
Andrew Miller, DET – (A) 1-3, 3.93 ERA, 34 1/3 IP, 11 BB, 23 K, 1.40 WHIP
Clayton Kershaw, LAD (A) 2-0, 1.08 ERA, 25 IP, 15 BB, 35 K, 1.24 WHIP
Robert Stubbs, CIN (A) - .264, 2 HR, 10 RBI, .686 OPS
Billy Rowell, BAL (A) – Injured, should start playing soon
Tim Lincecum, SF (AAA) – 4-0, 0.29 ERA, 31 IP, 11 B, 46 K, 0.74 WHIP

Lincoln will be out a long time, so he is out of the picture. The only guy really struggling (if .264 is bad) is Stubbs. Miller is in A because it is warmer in Lakeland and he pitched with Detroit last season.

So Miller and Morrow already made it to the Majors. Lincecum should be. Seriously, what else can he do in AAA? What are the Giants waiting for? He pitched 31 innings and gave up one run. ONE RUN. That is insane. As is 46 strikeouts. Call him up morons.

Longoria might be the next after that. Kershaw and Reynolds with sub 2.20 ERAs? Very good even in AA or A. Hochevar is putting up good numbers too. This might be the best top 10 ever in the history of the draft. I know it is too early to tell, but obviously teams did a good job evaluating.

If it doesn’t turn out to be that good, what draft did produce the best top 10 ever?

1985 (BJ Surhoff #1, Will Clark #2, Bobby Witt #3, Barry Larkin #4, Barry Bonds #6, Pete Incaviglia #8). Incaviglia clinches it.
1973 (Robin Yount #3, Dave Winfield #4)
1997 (JD Drew #1 although he didn’t sign, Troy Glaus #3, Vernon Wells #5, Michael Cuddyer #9, Jon Garland #10)
1999 (Josh Beckett #2, Barry Zito #9, Ben Sheets #10)
1986 (Matt Williams #3, Kevin Brown #4, Gary Sheffield #6)
1980 (Darryl Strawberry #1, Cecil Espy #8, Kelly Gruber #10)
1995 (Darin Erstad #1, Kerry Wood #4, Todd Helton #8, Geoff Jenkins #9)
2001 (Joe Mauer #1, Mark Prior #2, Mark Teixera #5)

Which just shows you how different baseball drafts are than football or basketball. Or even hockey. It is hard to project how good players will end up being.

The Mariners drafted 26 different #1 guys over the course of their history, including four #1 overall picks. How many turned into good players? All-Stars? Hall of Famers?

Hall of Fame (2) – Alex Rodriguez (#1 1993), Ken Griffey Jr (#1 in 1987)

All-Stars (2) – Dave Henderson (#26 in 1977), Jason Varitek (#14 in 1994)

Good Contributors (2) – Mike Moore (#1 in 1981), Tino Martinez (#14 in 1988)

Decent Players (6) – Darnell Coles (#6 in 1980), Spike Owen (#6 in 1982), Bill Swift (#2 in 1984), Ron Villone (#14 in 1992), Jose Cruz Jr (#3 in 1995), and Gil Meche (#22 in 1996)

Huh? (11) – Tito Nanni (#6 in 1978), Al Chambers (#1 in 1979), Darrel Akerfelds (#7 in 1983), Mike Campbell (#7 in 1985), Patrick Lennon (#8 in 1986), Roger Salkeld (#3 in 1989), Marc Newfield (#6 in 1990), Aaron Estes (#11 in 1991), Ryan Anderson (#19 in 1997), Matt Thornton (#22 in 1998), Ryan Christensen (#11 in 1999), and John Mayberry Jr. (#28 in 2002)

Jury is still out on Jeff Clement and Brandon Morrow.

No wonder the M’s have never won a World Series. Look at them blow top 10 picks from 1978-1984 and then with Pat Gillick signing free agents left and right, no 1st round pick in 2000, 2001, 2003, or 2004. Oh plus A-Rod, Griffey, and Varitek are all on other teams. Nice.

For some reason this makes me think of my pathetic baseball card collection, I think because my best cards came from that BJ Surhoff era. In fact, I believe BJ Surhoff is among the players whose rated rookie cards I have in plastic because at some point, in 1988, I really believed he was the next star. Sandy Alomar Jr. is also in plastic somewhere. So is my entire 20-card Ozzie Gullien collection. Who has an Ozzie Guillen colllection?
